Say Gin Fizz, and you think of summer evenings, beach parties, trendy venues: in a word, party! Discover how to prepare this cocktail suitable for a thousand occasions.

The Gin Fizz is the most famous representative of the Fizz family, the sparkling cocktails: light and effervescent drinks like the Gin Tonic and the Gin Lemon. A drink renowned worldwide, with admirers including none other than Admiral Nelson himself. It seems he recommended it as a remedy for scurvy on ships. Let’s see how to prepare it, some curiosities about its history, and, last but not least, how to make one with our Elena Gin.

Add the Soda (until the glass is full).

Garnish with a lemon slice.

From Jerry Thomas to the Roaring ’20s

Mentioned in the bible of mixology, the legendary The Bartender’s Guide: How to Mix Drinks; or, The Bon Vivant’s Companion written by the father of modern cocktails Jerry Thomas, the Gin Fizz has certainly existed since before 1862 (the year Thomas’s guide was published).

Admiral Horatio Nelson, the legendary British hero who defeated Napoleon, was determined to find a remedy for scurvy that afflicted sailors. Thus, he invented, so to speak, the Gin Tonic. By mixing gin, lemon juice, and sugar, he created a tonic that was supposed to protect his men from the disease.

When sailors found themselves in port, they used to drink the same thing they consumed on board, with the only addition of soda. And so, it seems, the Gin Fizz was born!

If in the second half of the 19th century it was Jerry Thomas who put the official Gin Fizz recipe in black and white, this drink became popular at the beginning of the 20th century.

The sea is always involved, and the cocktail’s history meets that of the Charleston. A wild dance, performed by colored dockworkers who quenched their thirst with none other than Nelson’s drink.

From the old world to the new, the Gin Fizz has earned a place in the hearts of Spirits enthusiasts, so much so that it is still one of the most widespread today. The International Bartender Association (IBA) classifies the Gin Fizz among the Unforgettables. If that’s not success…

Elena Gin Fizz

The key to the success of the Gin Fizz is the main ingredient of the drink: the gin. A Spirit with intense aromas will give the Gin Fizz unique characteristics.

Try our Elena Gin for your cocktail. The suggestions of aromatic herbs between Piedmont and Liguria, between Langa and Alta Langa, will give your drink a unique spirit.

And we return a bit to the original inspiration: to Nelson, to the sea, which from the peaks of Alta Langa can be felt on the most beautiful days.
