Gin Sour Coctail: con Elena Gin

Discover the origins, the tips for flawless foam, and how to enhance this timeless classic with our artisanal Dry Gin.

The charm of mixology often lies in its disarming simplicity. The Gin Sour cocktail perfectly embodies this concept: a precise balance between the strength of the spirit, the sharpness of citrus, and the smoothness of sugar. But have you ever wondered who first codified this sacred trinity of fine drinking?

The roots of the sour family go back to the long sea voyages of the 19th century, when mixing spirits with lemon juice was the tastiest — and most widespread — antidote to scurvy.

From seafaring remedy to icon of pure elegance, the step was surprisingly short.

The history: the art of balancing contrasts

Cocktails in the Sour family follow a golden rule, an almost mathematical formula that made bartending history: one part sweet, two parts sour, three parts strong spirit. In the case of the Gin Sour cocktail, the choice of alcoholic base completely defines the soul of the drink. Unlike its famous cousin, the Gin Fizz, which includes a final splash of soda for a longer, more thirst-quenching effect, the Sour is a denser, more intimate and silky drink, designed to be slowly savoured in a cocktail coupe.

The recipe

Ingredients

  • 5 cl Elena Gin: our wood-fired distilled Dry Gin.
  • 3 cl lemon juice
  • 2 cl sugar syrup: 2:1 ratio of sugar to water
  • 1.5 cl egg white, or aquafaba for a vegan version
  • Ice
  • A lemon peel or a maraschino cherry.

Method

  • Start by placing a cocktail glass, such as a Nick & Nora or coupe, in the freezer or filling it with ice.
  • Pour Elena Gin, lemon juice, sugar syrup and egg white into the shaker. Close and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds without ice. This step allows the egg proteins to incorporate air, creating a dense and long-lasting foam.
  • Open the shaker, fill it with ice and shake forcefully again for another 10–12 seconds to properly chill and dilute the cocktail.
  • Remove the ice from the glass and pour the drink, filtering it through a strainer, and optionally a fine-mesh sieve for an even more velvety foam.
  • Garnish with a lemon peel and serve immediately.

Tips for a textbook-perfect Gin Sour cocktail

Preparing this great classic at home is simple, but it requires the right technique. The original recipe calls for 5 cl of gin, 3 cl of strictly fresh lemon juice and 2 cl of sugar syrup.

The ingredient that makes the real difference and gives the drink its unmistakable texture? Egg white, or a little aquafaba for an excellent vegan alternative.

To obtain that characteristic and inviting white foam on the surface, the secret is the so-called dry shake: shake all the ingredients vigorously in the shaker without ice to perfectly whip the egg white, then add the ice and shake again to chill it properly.

The Sour variation with Elena Gin: a masterpiece of balance

It is precisely during mixing that the magic takes shape. The Sour variation with Elena Gin transforms a historically codified recipe into a completely new sensory experience. Our Dry Gin, proudly distilled in the Langhe using the “one shot” method in an antique wood-fired still, has an aromatic profile that naturally pairs with citrus. The balsamic notes of juniper from the Maritime Alps and the delicacy of almond blossoms emerge from the silky foam, while hints of Ligurian chinotto and citron interact perfectly with the sharpness of the lemon, creating a deep, elegant and persistent freshness.

Pour your masterpiece into a chilled coupe, garnish with a delicate lemon peel and let yourself be won over by our Piedmontese spirit.
